PD Cheerleaders Receive SMU's Top Spirit
Last spring the Palo Duro student body selected the 1969-70
cheerleaders. They are Patsy Bell, Dejauna Brown, Pam Johnson, Lily Koesjan,
Cathy Lemons, Patricia Plaster, Cindy Poe and Beverly Proffit.
The girls assumed their duties early in the summer as they
began painting signs and learning cheers in preparation for lhe first game.
Besides their cheerleading duties the girls kept busy with their summer jobs.
Cindy and Patsy remained on the home front and did babysitting. Patricia worked
at the civic Center and Cathy could be seen working as cashier at the Sav-On
Pharmacy in Hamlet.
Anyone needing their lawn mowed could contact Lily as she
spent most of her spare time on the working end of a lawnmower. Dejauna did a
little of everything. She cleaned houses, babysat and did some typing for Boys
Ranch. Pam did secretarial work at her fathers trucking company. Beverly was
kept busy babysitting.
In order to attend the cheerleading clinic at SMU the girls
washed cars, and cleaned houses to earn the money. At the clinic they learned
several new cheers, pom pom routines and various chants.
There were about 800 cheerleaders from around Arkansas,
Oklahoma and Texas. Pal o Duro's cheerleaders completed against twenty groups
in the senior high level. PD cheerleaders brought home the spirit stick which
means they had the best over all spirit. They also brought home some additional
honors. They won a second and a third place and several honorable mentions in
the cheerleading competition.
After completing three weeks of practice, a performance of
skills for a student-faculty committee, and try-outs before the entire student
body, eight girls were selected as cheerleaders for 1970-71. The announcement
of the ,eight will be made tonight, April 24, at the annual Cheerleader
Cotillion.
Also to be announced will be the Loyal Don. The candidates
are Carl McMahan, Ray Robertson, and W. R. Lutz.
The sixteen junior girls who began the after-school
practices last March 31 are: Gail Alexander, Sue Cox, Donna Davis, Lynn
Gustafson, Wynn Gustafson, Mary Hubbard, Belinda King, Debbie McGehee, Shelley
Martin, Lillie Spencer, Debbie Steger, Melba Thomas, Karen Walker, Linda
Washington and La Cheryl Wright.
The girls have been learning cheerleading fundamentals and
basic cheers under the instruction and supervision of the 69-70 cheerleaders.
On April 22, the candidates did cheers for a few selected teachers,
cheerleaders from previous years, and those from 69-70. This committee
evaluated the candidates and chose the best four or five.
The following day the girls showed their skills in an
all-school assembly. This assembly gave the students an opportunity to evaluate
the ability of each girl and to make their choices. Voting then took place
through the day in the library.
At the
Cotillion, which will last from 8:00 to 11:00 p. m., the music will be provided
by "Company's Comin' ". Admission will be $1.00 a person or an
activity card.
