Two very memorable athletic plays

Below I'll try to describe my most memorable PD "football play". I have another memorable "baseball play" that you can read about Click here.

On this football play, I blocked a punt against our mortal cross-town rivals ... the dreaded Tascosa Rebels.  Blocked punts are fairly rare. It's hard to rush the punter and block him from kicking the ball. At the start of this play, both teams lined up on the scrimmage line. I was positioned on the line and across from me was my rival who was supposed to block me from getting to the punter. In this situation I always tried to think of something I could do to crash through the line and block the punt. My first thought was always "give him the ole head fake one way then I would go the other".  I always had this thought in this situation, and it never worked... until this time.

I lined up, the ball was snapped, I gave a head fake to the defender in front of me and he took the fake. HE TOOK THE FAKE!  This doesn't happen, not even in practice. It was like Mosses parting the Red Sea. He went one way and I went unobstructed the other.  I had no one in front of me. I saw the punter catch the ball and start his kicking motion.  I ran towards him.  I was so amazed at the situation that I even remember hearing the wind rush by in my helmet, there was no one around me, i was in a zone.  I reached out and blocked the ball before he could kick it. I felt the ball hit my hands and arms.  I saw the ball carom across the ground, then I saw Ralph Scott pick up the ball and race towards the goal line for a score.  All this in seconds, all this completely unbelievable.

All year long, I played most every down except kick-offs and kick-returns.  After Ralph scored, I ran off the field so the kicking team could come on.  As I was running off I could see Coach Kirk on the side lines looking around tossing his head back and forth shouting "who blocked that kick?"... "who blocked that kick!".  I ran over to him and said, "I did Sir".  He smiled really big and gave me a huge hug.  We won the game 55 to 13.  Big win!

What a lifelong memory... Good Times :)
